Facebook, the most widely- used and recognized of any social media platform, is no stranger to controversy. Since the very beginning, Facebook has gained the ire of researchers and news companies. From the concern about social media being bad for people, to privacy scandals and accusations of censorship, this current scandal involves the leaked data of millions of users.

Facebook believes that the data from about 87 million users was shared improperly with Cambridge Analytica, a political consultancy. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been going from reporter to reporter to apologize, but that didn’t make a difference to stockholders. When the scandal broke, Facebook took a hit to its stock price. However, the stock price is now slowly rising again. A hashtag movement has risen up like with all controversies.

The #deletefacebook movement is slowly gaining steam, with more users deleting their Facebook accounts. Zuckerberg has said that the movement “had no meaningful impact.” Time will tell if this all blows over and people go back to Browsing facebook without a care in the world, or if this will leave a scar that Facebook can’t recover from.
