Cool down with hot summer movies

In the blink of an eye, school will be over and many of us will spend a great deal of time outdoors, whether at work or play. After getting beautiful tans (or scorching burns) we will want a way to cool off. And what better way to cool off than with a good movie. Let’s look at this summer’s new releases to separate the good from the bad to enhance our summer movie experiences.

X-Men: First Class
Another summer, another X-Men movie. “X-Men: First class,” due to be released June 3, will tell the story of the first class at Proffesor Xavier’s (James McAvoy) school for mutants and will serve as a prequel to the original “X-Men” film. This movie seems to have some potential in it, but this is a prequel and those traditionally have a bad track record. With any luck, this film will be better than most prequels and the X-Men franchise (which really is excellent) will not be negatively affected.

Green Lantern
Set to be released on June 17, “Green Lantern” is yet another addition to the litany of superhero films being released. It tells the story of a human military pilot who receives the Green Lantern’s ring and is forced to fight evil. “Green Lantern” will either be really good or just plain atrocious. First of all, movies based on DC brand comics tend to be very hit-and-miss in their quality. Second, it’s a man with a ring flying around trying to save the planet. I think this movie will be worth viewing because it will either be so epic we will be glued to our seats, or it will be so horrible we can laugh our way through it.
Cars 2
“Cars” was definitely as good as a modern animated film can get, so I’m not too sure how “Cars 2,” set to be released June 24, will compare. The plot seems interesting, as it will involve the cars traveling abroad with a little international espionage thrown in. I’m really not too sure on the whole spy thing. Call it a gut feeling, but I feel as if “Cars 2” just won’t live up to its namesake.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon

July 1 will introduce “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” and this movie will probably be awful. Why? Because it’s a Transformers live-action movie, and therefore, based on past examples, it will be bad and not worth the admission price. Fortunately, Michael Bay, the director of these abominations, has said this will be his last film. Unfortunately, Hasbro’s CEO apparently wants to make more. Please stop the horror show and don’t go see this movie.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
It’s Harry Potter. It’s the final movie in the series. It comes out July 15. What else really needs to be said?
Winnie the Pooh

It’s Pooh. It’s going to be in old-style animation. It will also be released July 15. Pooh or Harry Potter on July 15? I can’t say much more about this one either.

Captain America: The First Avenger
“Captain America: The First Avenger” will be released on July 22 and will be set in the same universe as popular movies like “Iron Man,” “The Incredible Hulk” and “Thor.” It tells the story of a wimpy American who attempts to join the U.S. Army during World War II and is rejected. He is then accepted into a program which makes him a super soldier and allows him to fight the Nazis. I don’t see how this movie could be bad unless someone did something extraordinarily stupid.

Cowboys & Aliens
This film contains two of the most popular genres in history, science fiction and westerns. Due in theaters July 29¸ this movie looks as if it will be amazing. While I have some doubts, I have marked this one on my calendar and will definitely be going to see it myself.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes
20th Century Fox will attempt to bring back “Planet of the Apes” with this remake on Aug. 5. I have the awful feeling that “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” like all other remakes, will be absolutely awful. I really wish producers would just leave a good movie series alone instead of ruining it.
