Cool off your summer with (supposedly) hot movies

With everyone gearing up enjoy the summer vacation, I’ve decided to provide a list of what are bound to be this summer’s big movies. In addition to this list, you get to hear all my wonderful thoughts on these movies based on whatever popped into my head when I read the movie hype. When we return to school in August, it should be interesting to determine if I’m right (probably) or wrong (not likely) about these movies.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Set to be released on May 28, this film is based on the 2003 video game of the same name. “Prince of Persia” will follow the story of a boy off the streets, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, who is made the heir to the Persian throne and must then fight to keep a rogue nobleman from using the Dagger of Time to go back in time. This looks like it will be a pretty decent film that will excite the viewer, though I am a bit wary about its video game origins.
Get Him to the Greek
Coming out on June 4, “Get Him to the Greek” is about the struggle of a record company intern, played by Jonah Hill, to get a drug- and alcohol-abusing rock star, played by Russell Brand, from his London home to Los Angeles in order to play a concert. This film looks like it will provide many laughs but may not impress anyone with an intelligent plot.
The A-Team
The latest in a wave of adaptations is “The A-Team,” set for released on June 11. The film will follow the same story as the original television show with a group of U.S. Army special forces soldiers suspected of war crimes who are forced to become mercenaries. This movie looks like it has quite a bit of potential, but if it plays too much off of the original TV series it could very well be a dud.
Jonah Hex
Yet another adaptation, “Jonah Hex” is set to be released June 18 and is based on DC Comics western style superhero of the same name. It follows the story of the title character, played by Josh Brolin, as he attempts to kill a terrorist, played by John Malkovich, at the request of the U.S. Army, which will get the warrants from him if he succeeds. This movie looks as if it will be quite action-packed and a great view for those that like a good bit of violence. Plus, Megan Fox’s participation is sure to make it popular.
Toy Story 3
Also on June 18 we get the third installment of family favorite “Toy Story” after more than a decade of waiting. This latest film follows the story of the toys as they are donated to a daycare center, because their owner is going to college, and their attempts to return home. Also included is an appearance by everyone’s favorite doll, Barbie! This movie looks as if it will do well, and, with any luck, the good folks at Pixar aren’t beating a dead horse with this childhood favorite.
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse
“Twilight’s” third film installment will arrive on June 30, much to the delight of its many fans. Enough said.
The Last Airbender
Arriving on July 2 will be this adaptation of Nickelodeon’s popular show. For those who haven’t seen the show, it follows the story of the last of his kind, Aang, played by Noah Ringer, as he tries to restore balance to a war torn world. Honestly, this movie looks as if the producers are going to butcher the TV show for anyone that hasn’t watched and liked it. For those that have never seen the show, it should be a good, action-packed movie, though a little unbelievable in a live-action movie.
Predators
And on July 9, we get the third installment of the “Predator” film series, 20 years after the last one! It follows a group of men that are abducted by a group of aliens, known as the predators, as they are hunted on a game reserve planet. Honestly, I’m not sure why this movie even got off the drawing board. There is a period of time after which a movie series should remain dead and this series has passed over that time by a bit. Hopefully, this new edition will still turn out to be an enjoyable film for those that pay to see it.
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice
On July 16, Nicolas Cage’s latest film arrives. Cage is cast as wizard that recruits a seemingly normal person, played by Jay Baruchel, as his apprentice in order to defend Manhattan from the threat of his nemesis, played by Alfred Molina. This movie looks as if it has a lot of potential and will definitely be better than the last Nicolas Cage movie I reviewed, “Knowing.”
The Other Guys
This latest Will Ferrell film, arriving on Aug. 6, stars Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg as second-rate NYPD detectives who are forced to step up into the shoes of the city’s star detectives and, of course, hilarity ensues. It seems like yet another movie with good potential, and since it’s not adapted from some other source, I already like it. “The Other Guys” definitely looks good for a laugh or two.
The Expendables
Set for released on Aug. 13, “The Expendables” tells the story of a group of men sent to overthrow a corrupt and brutal dictator in a South American country. This movie looks like an attempt to resurrect the action movie stars of the ‘80s and ‘90s with a cast that includes Jet Li, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Despite this the aging cast, “The Expendables” looks as though it will be a solid action movie that should delight fans.
