'Captain America' worth the wait

“Captain America: The First Avenger” is the latest in a series of interconnected movies based on Marvel superheroes that also includes “Iron Man,” “Thor” and “The Incredible Hulk.”

“Captain America” tells the story of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), a puny American who attempts to join the Army multiple times during World War II, but is rejected multiple times because of his size. Fortunately, Rogers meets a doctor working to develop a super-soldier and encourages Rogers to take part. Eventually, Rogers is selected to undergo the super-soldiertreatment and becomes Captain America.

In Europe, Nazi officer Johann Schmidt (Hugo Weaving), who had undergone an earlier, imperfect version of the same super-soldier serum Rogers received, and Dr. Amin Zola (Toby Jones) have stolen a device that contains massive amounts of power. The two plan to use this device to power Zola’s many inventions in order to overthrow Hitler and defeat the Allies, thus conquering the world.

In America, Captain America has become famous and is being used to sell war bonds to the public. Eventually, he is sent overseas to entertain the troops, who aren’t at all entertained by his performance. While there, he learns that Schmidt’s soldiers have destroyed his friend’s unit in battle. Captain America then sets off on a solo mission to retrieve his friend. This mission leads to Captain America’s crusade against Schmidt.

Marvel had been planning a Captain America movie since 1997, but the movie faced several issues and for a while Marvel didn’t have the money to make it. Now that they have actually made the movie, I must say it was worth the wait. “Captain America: The First Avenger” was absolutely spectacular. It contains excellent visual effects and excellent actors wrapped a solid story.

Usually when I write a review, I try to point out any negatives in the film, but I really couldn’t find any in this instance. I highly suggest spending the time to watch “Captain America.” The movie, however, is almost out of theaters, so you may have to wait for the DVD.
