“Accept the things that you cannot change” is math teacher Karen Stevenson’s favorite quote.

As a child Stevenson said she knew she didn’t want to be a doctor or a nurse, so she probably wanted to be a teacher. She states her greatest accomplishment has been “teaching for this long” and what makes her room her own is her “materials.” To her, the best thing about teaching occurs when students come back and tell her that what she taught them was important in their lives, while the worst thing is having to give a student a failing grade.

Stevenson’s first impression of Leechburg was that it was very welcoming. However, she joins a large number of students in that the thing she dislikes most about Leechburg: the lack of parking.

When she was in high school her favorite subject was math and she participated in concert band, choir, and Student Council, as well as being a majorette. After high school, she attended Clarion University, Seton Hill University and Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

The movie she would watch over and over is “Good Will Hunting.”  Currently, her favorite song is “The Way I Still Love You” by Chris Daugherty.

If she were independently wealthy, Stevenson said she would lie on the beach and read. Currently she is reading “Roses” and her favorite book is “The Glass Castle” because it’s a true story and she likes true stories. Despite liking to read so much, Stevenson doesn’t read magazines.

The hobbies she most enjoys participating are exercising and golfing. Additionally, she says there isn’t much she wants to accomplish anymore, but she would like to be a better golfer.

If she could leave right now and travel anywhere, Stevenson could be found at Hilton Head golfing.  She has already traveled outside the United States, having visited Aruba, Bermuda and the Dominican Republic.

According to Stevenson, the best dessert ever is an éclair. The best food she makes is spaghetti sauce and the oddest thing she has ever eaten was rabbit. Her refrigerator, which has no magnets on it, always contains cheese, milk and coffee creamer. Her favorite meal is Mogie’s Cajun chicken salad and her favorite restaurant is Ida’s.

Wednesday is her best day of the week because she knows that the weekend is approaching.  February is her worst month because of the cold weather and the snow.

While she was in high school and college, Stevenson worked at department stores. The first job she paid taxes for was when she worked in the deli at Sears.

Although she has never coached a sports team, Stevenson does enjoy watching basketball.

Her most treasured possessions are her grandchildren and the best gift she has ever given is time with her grandchildren.

In addition to her grandchildren, Stevenson’s family also includes her three brothers and three sisters.

The one thing about other drivers that annoys her the most is when they don’t follow the speed limits.  Her overall worst pet peeve is disorganization.

When she gets bored, Stevenson said she usually ends up cleaning her house. Her least favorite part of cleaning the house is cleaning the toilet.

Stevenson has no screensaver on her home computer nor does she have any computer games.  However, the one thing she never leaves home without is her cell phone.

A few more facts about Stevenson:

  • The three adjectives that she said describe her best are energetic, indecisive and hardheaded.
  • The three things she will never do are rock climbing, skydiving or moving to Alaska.
  • Her favorite color combination is blue and beige.
  • If she could wish for any super power, Stevenson would want to be able to see the future.
  • She finds herself saying “get going” a lot.
  • Stevenson is neither an early bird nor a night owl.
