If he could ever switch places with one person for a day, technology teacher Mark Duriancik says that he would like to switch with social studies teacher Scott Hooks, though if he could meet any person currently alive he’d like to meet Howard Stern. However, he definitely wouldn’t want to meet Oprah because he believes that she is annoying.

This night owl also says that he is most like Mr. Krabs of “Spongebob” fame, while he admires Michael Scott from “The Office” since, as Duriancik says, Scott always seems to “come out on top.”

Sports stories always catch Duriancik’s attention, and he enjoys watching and playing sports or fantasy football. He especially enjoys watching football and playing hockey; he supports his favorite sports teams by wearing their shirts and going to their games. Additionally, he has also coached sports: track at Robert Morris and basketball at Leechburg.

Duriancik, whose first impression of Leechburg was “small in a good way,” reports that the worst thing about being a teacher is the constant complaining, but that he does enjoy having former students visit and talk about their successes.

Mr. Balla from Kiski was the teacher that had the most influence on him while his second grade teacher, Ms. Fiscus, taught him that her name rhymed with “fish sticks.” While in high school, he most enjoyed math class while participating in yrack, basketball, cross country, chess club and SADD.  Afterward he attended Robert Morris and Pitt.

If he were independently wealthy, Duriancik said he would travel and would most likely be found on a beach in Aruba. Although he is not independently wealthy now, he has already done some traveling, having visited Canada and islands in the Caribbean with a Disney cruise chosen as his favorite vacation.

His refrigerator is regularly stocked with ketchup, milk and Diet Pepsi, but you probably won’t find sour cream there as he thinks it’s gross and won’t eat it. He says that he’s addicted to coffee, but chocolate is his guilty pleasure, preferably of the milk chocolate variety. The most unusual food he has ever eaten is octopus while the oddest thing he enjoys eating is sushi. If you happen to discover him at his favorite restaurant, Primanti Brothers, he will probably be eating hot sausage with eggs. At home, he said the best meals he makes are those that he grills.

In the event that students ever need to bribe Duriancik, he suggests nutty bars as the best way to his heart. However, if you can’t access nutty bars and only have soup or salad to give him, he prefers salad. Alternately, he prefers steak to chicken and enjoys his eggs scrambled.

Television is the one thing he couldn’t live without, especially “American Idol,” “Survivor” and MTV.  When he isn’t watching his TV and is bored, he enjoys playing computer games. When Duriancik ventures toward the big screen, “Point Break” is the movie he would watch over and over while “Life is like a box of chocolates” is his favorite movie quote (from “Forest Gump”). His reading list includes his favorite magazine, Sports Illustrated, as well as anything written by Stephen King.

When he hears the word “technology,” Duriancik thinks of computers, which he also thinks of as the defining part of his classroom.

This Virgo, who wishes he was a Leo, claims to have never wanted a cat and prefers dogs to cats, having owned several dogs (as well as a ferret).

Friday happens to be the best day of his week “because Saturday is the next day,” while January is the worst month of his year because it’s cold.

His all-time worst pet peeve is Penn State fans, but drivers that drive too slowly also annoy him. He also detests having to do the dishes and said he has never quite learned to clean up after himself. He said that the three things he will never do are go deep-sea diving, be the principal or wait in line for an autograph.

He said that the best gift he has ever received was his wife’s hand in marriage and his kids, while the best he has ever given was his hand in marriage to his wife.

10 More fun Duriancik facts:

  • If he were a rapper, he would be called “D-Unit.”
  • He has a phobia of swimming in the ocean, but swimming with dolphins is the “coolest” thing he has ever done.
  • His dream car is a Lamborghini.
  • The superpower he would wish for is being able to fly.
  • His most unusual talent is being able to “see into the future.”
  • His favorite color combination is green and purple.
  • He names The Cult as the best band ever.
  • His part-time job while he was in school was delivering flowers, while his first “official” job was as a cashier at a convenience store.
  • He has one older brother.
  • “Treat others the way you want to be treated” is the one lesson his parents taught him that he’ll never forget.

Anti-Penn State connection

I have a whole new respect for D now that I know he dislikes Penn State fans as much as I do. WE ARE...not good!
