Not Just for Trekkies
By Matt Grantz, Staff Writer
Do you enjoy high excitement coupled with excellent special effects? What about fights in space and good humor? Then J.J. Abrams’ reboot of “Star Trek” is the film for you, even if you’re not a diehard Trekkie.
Abrams brings his experience from major projects such as “Lost” and “Mission Impossible III” to one of television’s longest running franchises. This new spin on Gene Roddenberry’s 44-year-old creation brings with it the best special effects seen in a “Star Trek” movie and a story that doesn’t require the viewer to have seen any other of the “Star Trek” movies. Yet, this story should still resonate with every “Star Trek” fan.
The story line follows the classic model of a hero story with the evil enemy, Nero, introduced at the beginning of the film and returning to fight the hero James Kirk in a battle of galactic importance that takes up most of the film. The face-to-face battle at the end evokes reminders of an Indiana Jones action sequence. Along the way, the hero Kirk is forced to discover himself as well as those he’ll need to complete his journey, in this case Spock, who will become his closest friend.
Overall, this new incarnation of “Star Trek” is an excellent, action-packed film that is well worth the price of the DVD.
