The Sisterhood of Traveling pants
by Emily Bing, Staff Writer

Ann Brashares’ "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants," the first part of a series of novels for teenagers, is a compelling story of teen-aged friendships. The novel is full of lessons about how hard life can be, but also lessons about how true friends will always be there.

The main characters, Tibby, Lena, Bridget and Carmen, have different personalities, backgrounds and even body shapes, but are best friends brought together by a mysterious pair of jeans that fit every single one of them. The pants also give them good luck whenever they wear them.

The story focuses on one summer in which they must all go their own ways, even to a different country, and they mail the pants to each other so that each gets the chance to experience the pants’ good luck. As the pants travel to each girl, we experience life-shaping events in their lives.

This book is marvelous, genuine, fabulous and fantastic. I would give it 4.5 stars out of 5.

By the way, "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" is different from the movie of the same name. I would recommend reading the book before you jump to conclusions after seeing the movie. And if you haven’t seen the movie or its sequel, do yourself a favor and read the book first. As is usually the case, the book is a far better experience.
