Night World No. 1
by Kaycee Blair, Staff Writer

Written by L.J. Smith, "Night World No. 1," is a collection of three stories about vampires, werewolves, witches and shapeshifters who lives among humans without their knowledge. The three books included in the first volume are "Secret Vampire," "Daughters of Darkness" and "Spellbinder. "

The books focus on Night World’s strict laws for its supernatural race. Falling in love with a human is one thing that breaks all the rules, even if the human is a person’s soulmate. The other rule is that humans should never be allowed to discover the existence of the Night World. The punishments for rules infractions are terrible.

If you’re in to the current vampire love sagas (aka the "Twilight" series), you may like this series, but don’t expect it to be the same. While it still offers a teen point of view, the idea of humans and supernatural creatures co-existing and the idea of forbidden love with a soul mate, the focus characters in each story, as well as each plotline, are very different, although some characters from one story, like Ash Redfern from the first two story, may wander into another.

In the first book, "Secret Vampire," school has just ended and Poppy North is hoping to have the best summer with her best friend and crush James Rasmussen. But unfortunately on the first day of vacation, Poppy learns that she is very sick and that there might not be a cure. In order to save Poppy’s life, James tells her about Night World and offers to turn her into a vampire like him. Once Poppy becomes a vampire, she is kidnapped by James’s cousin Ash. Since Poppy is a vampire, she must leave everyone and everything she loves. She and James leave to find a safe place where they won’t be caught disobeying Night World’s harsh rules.

The second book, "Daughters of Darkness," tells the tale of three vampire sisters, Rowan, Kestrel and Jade, fugitives from Night World who must leave their family to live with another relative, great-Aunt Opal, who has also left Night World. When strange things start to happen after the girls move in, next-door neighbor Mary-Lynnette and her brother Mark become suspicious and start to investigate. After the three sisters catch Mary-Lynette and Mark, they find out that Aunt Opal was murdered before the girls’ arrival. The five team up to find the killer, but someone unexpected shows up who could ruin everything: the three girls’ older brother Ash. Ash learns that not only is Opal dead but his youngest sister, Jade, is Mark’s soul mate. Not long after his arrival, Ash falls in love with human Mary-Lynnette. Together they try to find Opal’s killer but run into a rogue Night World person who only causes them problems.

In the third book, "Spellbinder," two witch cousins, Thea and Blaise Harman, have just been expelled from another school. At their new school, Thea meets Eric Ross. Blaise, who is used to getting all the guys, becomes frustrated when Eric wants only Thea. While they’re at the new school, the two cousins meet with three other witches, Vivienne, Selena and Dani. With the help of Vivienne, Selena and a love talisman, Blaise again tries to win over Eric. To protect Eric, Thea tries to force a witch ghost to look after him, but Blaise ruins the spell and Thea lets some other mysterious ghost out. Thinking it no big deal, Thea doesn’t worry about the ghost. When the ghost murders a boy, Thea and Eric come up with a plan to get rid of the ghost on Halloween. But after Thea and Eric are sentenced to have their memories erased, Blaise tries to help out the two so that they can retain their memories.
