Although the Lady Devils varsity basketball team is coming off another dismal season, this may be the year they turn things around.
Coach Sarah Brady Cuffia returns, and while she has had limited success in previous years, she said she looks for this team to turn things around.
Cuffia said she has very high expectations for this group of girls. “There is less tension between the girls,” she said. “We have a good mesh between our former players, and the girls have really embraced the new players.”
While the Lady Devils carry only one senior, Anne Brady, on the roster, they are a very experienced group. Many of the girls have equal or greater experience than other teams’ seniors, since many Lady Devil juniors have started or received playing time since their freshmen season.
Juniors Paige Norris and Elegance Hartwick are transfers to the school district this school year and add new talent as well as playing experience to the team. Cuffia said she hopes the new players will spark competition among the team.
As well as attempting to turn the program around, Coach Cuffia will also watch her younger sister Anne play her last year of high school basketball. Cuffia said that during the games and practice, she doesn’t think of Anne as a sister, but after the game she can’t help thinking that “Anne just isn’t old enough to graduate yet.”
Anne Brady said that she hopes to experience more success this year and build as a team. And in regards to be coached by her sister, she added, “It can be frustrating at times, but, overall, I like it.”
