Boys’ head basketball coach Damian Davies signs autographs for young fans on Blue & White Night.

With basketball season operating full throttle, boys’ basketball head coach Damian Davies discusses what it takes for success in 2010.

TV: How have open gyms and summer practices prepared the team for the upcoming season?
Davies: The team practiced for six weeks in the summer, with each practice about three hours long in the morning. The team has developed a 10,000 shot club. The players shoot about 500 shots a day. The boys work on the fundamentals so that when the season arrives, the team can focus on strategies.

TV: What kind of adjustments have you made to better your team?
Davies: They work on defense and pressure. A lot of the players are fundamentally strong, so many players can play various positions. We work on confidence and staying positive.

TV: How is having a new coach on staff affecting the team?
Davies: Coach Adam Petrosky is new on board this year. He has brought experience and playing knowledge to the team.

TV: How do the underclassmen play a big role on the team?
Davies: We always look to the seniors as the leaders. The seniors do a good job at embracing the role of leadership. The underclassmen’s role is to live up to the seniors and learn.

TV: How does the section look?
Davies: I think we’re going to be competitive in the section. The goal is always to make it to WPIALS, which I think we’ll do. It’s tough because we play a lot of private schools, not a lot of local rivalries. We play the WPIAL football state champs.

TV: Who will be the biggest challenge?
Davies: Serra Catholic and Clairton are going to be challenges. St. Joe’s is a previous rival. We’re playing a lot of bigger schools that aren’t in our section to prepare us for our section.

TV: What are you looking forward to most about this season?

Davies: The excitement and possibilities that come along with the season itself. Just watching the players do their best is great.
