Closing the book, not door, on Class of 2011

Note: As the end of the year approaches, it is time for my end-of-the-year editorial. Usually this is my opportunity to address the progress of the newspaper and the staff and to sum up the year. However, senior Anne Brady requested that a second article be dedicated to her. So, I have decided to dedicate this article not only to Anne, but to the entire senior class.
The end of this school year leaves me pondering and looking forward to my senior year. However, I have also been thinking and looking back on all of the memories I have shared with this senior class. I am sure life will go on, but I can’t help thinking that Leechburg High will just not be the same without the outstanding senior class that leaves us one June 2.
This senior class has uplifted many Leechburg’s sports. The large class of seniors led the football team to its most successful season in years, and the seniors of the softball team have been a part of four straight playoff appearances as well as a conference championship this year. A large class of seniors on the baseball team has lead the team to a second straight playoff appearance, and the boys of the basketball team, sporting Mohawks, upset Serra Catholic and returned to the WPIAL playoffs.
Also, seniors Anne Brady and Caleb Orendi were inducted to the Armstrong County Sports Hall of Fame and became the first pair of students to be named Scholar Athletes of the year from the same school in the same year. Furthermore, Garrett Miller was awarded the KDKA Extra Effort Award for his success on the football field as well as in the classroom.
Not only has this senior class been strong on the field, but their school spirit is unmatched off the field. The LBG Zoo can always be heard rocking the stands at any sporting event. The seniors boast a school spirit that is without competition at any event, something this senior class can be proud to be a big part of.
As successful as the seniors have been athletically, they have been even more so academically. About 20 seniors are expected to graduate as honor students. Also, many students are continuing on to college. Seniors have enrolled as close as Penn State’s New Kensington campus and as far as Arizona State University.
This senior class leaves us with memories that we will never forget. I could speak of their accomplishments for many more paragraphs. However, I will conclude this article simply by saying that Leechburg’s underclassmen, staff and community appreciate the contributions that you, the Class of 2011, have made to this school, and I think I speak for the entire LAHS family when I say that you will surely be missed.
