Why a Bible Club?
by Bri Bish, Staff Writer
In high school, participating in clubs is a great way for students to connect and build relationships with one another. For such a small school, LAHS offers a wide variety of clubs.
But two students, junior Jake Mrochek and I (a senior), felt that something was missing. So, we designed and developed the Leechburg Bible Club for several reasons:
to reinforce moral and family values,
to develop character,
to instill principles for successful living,
to develop peer relationships and
to provide opportunities for life-applications.
We approached math teacher Frank Ippolito to be the adviser. We met to discuss what actions needed to take place for this club to exist. Step one was to get the club approved by the school board; step two was to find interested students to join; and step three was to find a guest speaker to conduct the meetings. On Oct. 21, 2009, the Leechburg Area Board of School Directors approved the formation of Bible Club.
Harvest Baptist Church Youth pastor Tim Delaney has been conducting the meetings. To avoid schedule conflicts with all the sports and other activities in which students are involved, the Bible Club meets every Tuesday morning at 7 a.m. until 7:30 a.m. Refreshments – usually donuts or cookies – are provided. Students from grades 7-12 may join and visitors are welcome to sit in on the meetings.
The Leechburg Bible Club ultimately exists to help chart a course in the lives of Christian students. It provides each student with a refuge of acceptance and a place of fellowship. The students are challenged to live for Christ in a public school and to positively influence the school environment.
