Seventh graders adjust to high school life

Interviews and photographs by Dan Rzewnicki and Andrew McDermott, Staff Writers

Seventh graders have had four months to adjust to their new home in the high school, enough time to formulate more than a few opinions about what they like and dislike about their move from elementary school. To find out how they feel about their lives as seventh graders, we asked them three questions: What is the biggest adjustment coming from elementary to seventh grade? What is your favorite class and who is your favorite teacher this year and why? What one thing about elementary school do you miss most and why?

Marissa Matarrese: I would say [adjusting to] the amount of homework because there was less last year, also, the responsibility. The work is obviously harder, so we’re responsible for more.

Tyler Snyder: The biggest adjustment is eating the last lunch at 12:50 to eating two hours earlier at 10:50. One thing I miss most is recess. I miss going outside and hanging out with my friends.

Meghan Slifer: You can’t get away with everything. You have to follow the rules or you get detention. My favorite class is reading. I like it because we don’t take very many tests or quizzes. My favorite teacher is Ms. Knapick.

Levi Grafton: The biggest adjustment would be getting to class on time. My favorite class would be math because it’s my easiest and best class ever. My favorite teacher is Mr. Reams the band teacher. He’s the best.

Alli Oberdorf: I would say the biggest adjustment was being with the older kids. I think I miss my sixth grade teachers the most because I really had fun.

Joshua Rowe: The biggest adjustment from coming to the seventh grade is that we have more classes to change and we have to wake up one hour earlier. One thing that I miss the most about elementary is recess because we could get free time to stretch and let our brains clear of any stress.

Laura Duceour: My biggest adjustment would be to get to my classes on time because our teachers don’t take us.

Kurtis Shay: The schedule being changed every nine weeks is the biggest adjustment coming to seventh grade. I miss all my old teachers because they helped me when I was having trouble.

Ciara Gilson: My favorite class is probably earth science because it is fun and I like doing experiments with science. My favorite teacher is Ms.DeCapite because she is nice. But I miss how there wasn’t as much homework as I have now in the middle of school.

Kody Hemke: My favorite teacher is Ms. Bennet because whatever we do she puts fun into it. I miss accelerated reader. You could read a book you like and take a test on it to get points, and then maybe get prizes at the end of the year.

Colton Kalmar: My favorite class is Algebra I with Ms. Herring. I love math and anything that has math involved in it. Ms. Herring is very fun and nice and doesn’t give us much homework at all. I wish I could have her for more than Algebra I and geometry.

Jeffrey Pacuch: My favorite class is geography and my favorite teacher is Mr. Ritzel because he is fun and kind.

Lucian Webb: The one thing I miss most about elementary school is the teachers that helped me get where I am now.

Devin Myers: I guess that I don’t miss anything about elementary. Everything is better here.

Still more advice for 7th graders

I just want to wish the 7th graders good luck. The classes are easy now, but once you get into trigonometry, Honors English, and chemistry, you really have to grind your nose in the books. Time management is the most important.

Even more 7th grade advice

Don't stress out, 7th graders!! I promise that everything will get easier. I understand that being at the bottom of the totem pole can be extremely intimidating, but every day gets a little better. My piece of advice is this: Try not to get hooked up in drama. Prioritize and focus on your work because before you know it, you'll be a senior.

7th graders fitting in well

They [7th graders] have been doing really well in gym where I can see them in action. They are really adjusting well to the middle school and I think they will have a real easy time going to high school. Good job, 7th graders!

It gets easier, guys, High school seems rough and scary at first, but the teachers are really nice and understanding. Of course, you have to follow the rules, but they are really simple and the teachers will help you the first few years. They realize it's a rough change for you guys too.
