Huth begins transition from copy room to library

Although Kristen Huth is working hard as the student teacher in the library, she moonlights at another position, that of a copy editor for the Tribune-Review, specifically the Valley News Dispatch.

Although she said she hates the hours, she does like her newspaper job because she works with different news every day. “I like the fact I learn something new every day,” she said.

But Huth’s love of reading led her to work on her certification in library information science, which resulted in her student teaching assignment at Leechburg with librarian Paula Moran.

A Freeport Area High School graduate, Huth attended Penn State graduating with a major in journalism and a minor in French. She said she wasn’t sure she should change her career because of the economy, but she decided to become a librarian because of her love of reading, especially anything about American history. She said she always volunteered in the library when she was in high school and she particularly likes the library atmosphere because it is quiet.

Huth didn’t exactly choose Leechburg for her assignment, but she did request to student teach close to her home in Sarver. Pitt placed her at Leechburg for a 60-day student teaching experience and she said is satisfied with placement.  “Actually, I like Leechburg,” she said. “I like how small it is. I like how I get to work with grades 7-12.

“I enjoy working with Ms. Moran. She is very helpful because she has a lot of experience. She also makes it exciting. What she is letting me do is for the research writing class that she teaches. I am excited to work with the kids.”
