Fresh faces at LAHS: Get a ‘read’ on Bennett
Interview by Victoria Oberdorf, Staff Writer

While seventh graders are well acquainted with their reading teacher, most senior high school students don’t even realize a new reading teacher has taken residence in Room 412. Replacing former reading teacher Barb Turiak who retired in June is Bethany Bennett, who previously taught at Butler High School but chose to take the position as a seventh and eighth grade reading teacher at Leechburg this year. Get to know a bit more about Bennett in this Q&A interview.

TV: Where did you go to high school?
Bennett: I went to Shaler High School in Pittsburgh.

TV: Growing up, did you play any sports?
Bennett: Not really. I did play intramural softball for a year in high school though.

TV: Where did you go to college?
Bennett: I went to IUP.

TV: Did you plan on teaching middle school students?
Bennett: Actually, I planned on being an elementary school teacher, but when I was in college I was in this program where I could be a reading teacher. So I went back to grad school after I had originally graduated with my bachelor’s degree and got my degree that certified me in high school. I taught at Butler last year, but I quit that job to work here to teach middle school reading. Maybe someday I’ll go back to teaching elementary though. But I really do love it here.

TV: What are your likes and dislikes?
Bennett: Well, obviously I like reading because I’m an English teacher. I love to go to the movies, and I love to shop, as does every other girl I’m sure. I like to go running a lot too. I also like to just drive around and see scenery and to go on road trips.  There’s not much that I dislike. I do dislike mean people, but that’s about it.

TV: What are your likes and dislikes of Leechburg thus far?
Bennett: Oh, I love Leechburg; I have no complaints, no dislikes!  The kids are great, the faculty is great and the school day just flies by. I definitely have no complaints.
