Spring's bi-polar weather under scrutiny
by Dan Rzewnicki, Editor in Chief
April 18, 2011
So it was the first day of spring, that first nice day in months. The sun was shining, so I put on my cheap sunglasses and went outside to get my first sunburn of the year. After a day of soaking up the sun and a night full of painful sunburn, I put on my shorts the next morning, only to realize that the temperature had slipped below freezing and the rain was beginning to turn to ice. Spring weather really grinds my gears.
How can it be nearing 80 degrees one day and below freezing the next? It seems as if one day I’m outside ready to go swimming and the next morning I’m outside in a parka searching for my car among the snow drifts.
Another thing that really irks me about this particular spring is that there is no green anywhere. The only green on the trees is the green pine trees, but those needles would survive a nuclear war. There is just nothing out that makes me think spring. No matter what clothes I wear or what songs I listen to, nothing can get me thinking spring when I go outside and it looks as if all vegetation has gone extinct.
Spring is also unfailingly filled with completely unpredictable rainy days. I suppose that April showers do bring May flowers, but one rain storm a week should be sufficient. Most people water their flowers anyway, so why even bother with the rain when we can handle it on our own?
Spring is also home to spring cleaning, as most people would gather from the name. Spring cleaning is usually something to dread for most people, especially if we skipped out on spring cleaning for the last 10 springs. It is at times like these that we begin to stumble upon things we had hoped never to see again, such as a lucky pair of underwear from the seventh grade kept hidden in a certain spot so that Mother wouldn’t wash the luck out of them, yearbooks that reveal the very small number of friends I had or a picture that reminded me of my poor taste in style, appearance and acquaintances.
Perhaps worst of all, this is the time of year that teachers begin to realize that there is no hope to cover all of the material they had planned to cover. Now clearly past the point of no return, most teachers simply say, “Oh darn, test on the next three chapters on Monday!”
During spring, school work seems to pile up faster than kids run on the way to lunch. Even worse, though, is the fact that the teachers that are on time are beginning to hand out the most difficult assignments and projects, nearly ensuring the failure of all students.
Now, I generally do enjoy spring, but this emotionally draining rollercoaster of weather has drained me of all the strength I have to endure another day below 50 degrees. Also, I find many people badgering me about writing more articles. Now contrary to what one might think about someone with an article based upon complaining, I happen to be a rather happy person and often run out of things to complain about. However, I can usually find something bad about almost anything (or anyone), except for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, George Lopez or the last essay I wrote for Mrs. Dewitt. But, until next time, spring weather really grinds my gears.

Spring weather is pathetic

I completely agree with you, Dan. This weather is getting a litle ridiculous. It has rained for pretty much every day since April 1. Someone told me it rained 25 days out of the 30 days in April. That is really pathetic. I guess you are right; April showers bring May flowers. But does it really have to rain this much? Not to mention you can't go outside to play basketball or just take a walk. Also, softball and baseball seasons are getting ruined. For softball this season, we have had only two outside practices. It's softball season, the time you go outside and it's hot. But this year has been the complete opposite because every game is getting cancelled and practice has been moved to the gym. I wish the weather would clear up and it would stop raining and storming every day.

This is so true. I can't believe we got snow this late in the year. The weather is just too confusing. And I totally agree that all of the homework and projects are piling up. Spring is no longer my favorite season! Great job, Dan.

Weather plays havoc with baseball

This weather is absolutely horrible. Usually our baseball season would be pretty much over, but the rain has slowed the season to a halt. All of the JV games have been canceled to make time for the varsity section games. So, most of the younger players on the team barely see the field of play this season. I hope this weather lets up already.

Can't wait for summer weather

Yes, the weather is really sporadic, Dan. It always seems to be nice when I don't have time to go fishing and then not nice when I do have time. Since it is May, I don't think we will have too many cold days left. The bigger problem seems to be that it's always raining. I can't wait for summer!

Weather can't decide

I hate spring. Around Leechburg, we have two seasons, winter and summer. Springtime is when the weather cannot decide whether it wants to be winter or summer. I just hate how much it rains because then I can't do anything outside. I agree with you Dan -- spring weather is pretty annoying.

Weather causing clothing, softball issues

I am sick and tired of the weather we have been witnessing. The other day I did my spring cleaning in my closet to put all my winter clothes away and exchange them with summer clothes. Go figure. The next day I was in need of my sweater. Three days later it is warm enough to lay out in my new bathing suit and catch some rays. The hot and cold weather is not the worst part. All of the rain has cancelled several softball games. Now we are forced to play a game almost every day of the week, and that gets tiring!

Sick of 'April showers'

Dan, I couldn't agree with you more! I thought the snowy, yucky winter months were over. But, apparently, I was wrong! I put my UGG boots and winter jackets away thinking that it was time to pull out the flip flops and tank tops! I'm sick of "April showers bring May flowers." I think April has been filled with enough showers, and I'm not seeing any flowers!

I am pretty sure I tell you every week how much I love your articles, but they seriously make my day. I couldn't agree more about this ridiculous weather. I really hope next week it decides to stay warm for one day for prom! And as far as the work load goes, I have been telling Senora Shank for two weeks that it is time to quit, and she just keeps piling it on. But don't worry, Dan. This time next year you will be loving your life even with all the work and bad weather!
