Reflections of my last high school musical

Every year, at least one person asks me why I put up with the stress of musical season. And, every year, I answer the same: I put up with the stress for the reward. The only people who can truly understand my answer are those who have participated in a musical at least once in their lives. It’s like training for months for a sport and then having the one amazing game – except it’s a whole lot better.

The adrenaline rush I receive from an opening night performance matches nothing else I have ever felt. Hearing the audience clap and cheer and seeing them stand as the entire cast takes a bow is by far the coolest experience.

Tonight, I will feel that initial rush for the last time at LAHS as I take the stage for “Seussical.” I can’t explain enough how great this musical truly is. As an elementary student, I never read Dr. Seuss. Actually, I never picked up my first Dr. Seuss book until this year when I read “Horton Hears a Who” to research my role. But it’s safe to say that I have completely fallen in love with everything Seuss after taking part in this musical.

My biggest fear with every musical is the community’s reaction. I have gone to plenty of musicals performed around the area and have wanted to leave by the end of the first act. I hope that everyone leaves our musical just as excited as the cast is to perform it.

[This last paragraph is relevant only if you’re reading it April 16, 17 or 18. If you still want to read the last paragraph after 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 18, then you read at your own risk. If you want to attend the musical and the time and date are after April 18 at 2 p.m., it’s too late. After that point, “Seussical” will just be a fond memory to cast and audience alike.]

The cast and crew have put much time and effort into the last four to five months in order to produce a great musical. If you can’t tell, now’s my time to plug the musical one last time. I urge everyone, no matter how old, to come to see it. I know there are things that everyone will find completely hysterical. I promise we won’t disappoint.

Kirsten, I thought you did an amazing job as Horton! I thought that everybody else did an excellent job as well. In my opinion, this year's musical was the best one yet. I loved the storyline and how most of the play was singing and dancing. All the hard work paid off!

Hard work paid off

This year's musical was great. I could really tell that everyone in it put in a huge amount of time preparing for it. I know it's stereotypical that athletes don't appreciate or understand the time you guys put in, but I definitely could see everyone's hard work and I think it paid off.
