Jack Frost and Mother Nature in cahoots?

by Dan Rzewnicki, Staff Writer
March 1, 2010

Due to recent events I have had plenty of time to ponder what my next column should be about. I also had enough time to build a Twinkie tower, a soap box race car and a small igloo. I even became an expert of every Winter Olympic sport. Also due to recent events, I will be complaining to you, my readers, about the snow. I hate snow.

I would be personally happy if I never saw a single snowflake ever again; however, I know that some of you are into sled riding, a white Christmas and all that jazz. But, consider this, you overly happy snow lovers: Santa Claus makes it to California and Hawaii every year and they haven’t had a white Christmas since the ice age.

Furthermore, due to your precious snow we will be attending school in the first week of June. So instead of soaking up the sun, I, and the rest of my peers and teachers, will be watching movies until I want to cry, or, like 80 percent of the student body, will be sitting in Kris Kulick’s computer lab.
.
All of this snow also hinders the daily activities of the average American student. First, all activities are canceled, making many of us realize that maybe school isn’t all that bad. Next, many parents expect us to stay home, and do nothing. But nobody really wants to stay home and watch all this snow melt, for those who do would surely feel their brains turn to mush before seeing green grass again.

Lastly, someone has to shovel this snow. That responsibility usually falls into the hands of the young bucks in the family. So, you (and you know who you are) bundle up as much as you can and go into the snowstorm. Of course, you are only armed with an old sandbox shovel since, convenient for your parents’ amusement, the shed is sealed shut with snow, trapping the real snow shovel inside. How very, very cruel Mother Nature can be.

This snow storm is delaying our school year and our activities as well as traumatizing many of our young lives. That really grinds my gears.

Missed a big snow

Posted by "Melinda McCorkle" on March 2, at 1:33 p.m.

I completely agree with this! All the snow and cold weather really brings me down. However, I was kind of hoping for a big snow storm this winter...all of the snow was soo pretty!

Blog brings smile to winter gloom

I completely agree with this, Dan! I have had enough of this snow to last me the rest of my life! Also, great job on your blog. Once again you had me smiling from start to finish!

Spring better be here

I hope Mother Nature lets all of her emotions out this winter because I never want this to happen again. I'm pretty sure that the snow JUST finished melting in Gilpin. The sun is finally out, and I hope it stays out.

Parents' Power -- the snow shovel

Posted by "Jolynn Young" on March 17, at 12:31 p.m.

Dan, another great piece to ponder! From a parent's perspective, we take pleasure (OK, GREAT pleasure) in uttering those most loathed words, "Go shovel the sidewalk--NOW!" I must admit I sipped a few pots of coffee while sending my two middle-schoolers out to clear a path for the mailman, the dog walker, and their dad. And for the record, the novelty of a cancellation wears thin for the teachers, too--especially if we have to spend it with our own bored children! Keep up the good work, Dan!

Missed out on the sandbox shovel

Posted by "Matt Grantz" on March 11, at 9:47 p.m.

You couldn't be more right, Dan. The snow, I'm sad to say, actually made me miss school. Though I'm glad I avoided the sandbox shovel that you got.

That's three great blogs in a row. Keep 'em comin', Dan!

Snow definitely grinds her gears

Posted by "Emily Bing" on March 11, at 6:42 p.m.

Dan, this was great. Snow really does make me mad. I had to shovel the snow when we had the 2-3 feet of snow. It took forever and after that I wish I would never see another snowflake. This is a great blog.

Not going to miss the snow

Posted by "Carli Epolite" on March 10, at 8:51 a.m.

I totally agree with you, Dan. That entire week of school that we missed I read a totally of 4 books and they weren't small. I couldn't even open my back door because it was snowed in and after that it was practically frozen shut! I could live without seeing snow ever again!

On my favorite list

Posted by "Danielle Lewis" on March 8, at 2:10 p.m.

I agree 100%. I hate the snow. It's cold, wet, ruins everything, and is very hazardous! I love your point on how Santa gets to Hawaii and California and they haven't had snow in years. This is my favorite article. So many good points!

Glad 'snowmageddon' is over

Posted by "Allison Koleny" on March 5, at 9:03 a.m.

Dan, I agree with you 100 percent. I never realized how much I would miss school. No one made me shovel which made me happy.

Snow's going to be around awhile

Posted by "Ethan Vigna" on March 4, at 8:43 a.m.

Over the past month I have had to shovel more snow than ever before. It is starting to get old, and I hope it doesn't snow again until next winter. The snow we have now probably isnt going to melt until May!

More gear grinding over snow

Posted by "Angela Olshansky" on March 3, at 11:22 p.m.

Dan, you are a great blogger. I thoroughly enjoy reading your complaints every other week, and I am glad that someone else out there feels the same way as I do about snow. I think snow may even grind my gears more than it does yours. Shocking, right? I truly can't wait for winter 2010 to be over.

Snow helps students to appreciate school

Posted by "Paula McCorkle" on March 3, at 6:55 p.m.

Dan, I totally agree with you on this article! At first, I was so amazed with how much snow we had gotten. However, after about the second day, I realized that I had nothing to do and could probably tell you everything that happened on the TV that day. I realized that school was definitely not as bad as I thought (especially compared to shoveling snow, which I did a lot).

Good article!!

Ups and downs of snow

Posted by "Andrew McDermott" on March 2, at 2:16 p.m.

Dan, your article is very true. Shoveling snow always stinks, but at least you can get out of school. Keep it up, Dan!

And you think you have it bad?

Posted by "Kyle Snyder" on March 2, at 2:14 p.m.

You get an old sandbox shovel...? All I get is a rusty spoon.
