Leechburg’s lists to live by
by Kirsten Medice and Angela Olshansky, Staff Writers

When the idea of writing a blog was first proposed to us and we were asked what type of blog we wanted to write, the first idea that that appealed to both of us was the idea of lists – lists about everything and anything we could possibly make a list about, lists about lists even.

There’s no better way to get information than from a list, so we decided to take the responsibility of making funny, creative and informative lists for Leechburg’s student body. We all know everyone is interested in what everyone else is doing or likes to do, so what better way to connect than over common interests or dislikes?

Anything we write about in our lists will be up for dicussion, and believe us, we’d love to hear what everyone has to say about what we write. You readers can tell us how much you love our ideas or hate them. Either way, we’re willing to hear you out as long as your thoughts are relevant and don’t go overboard.

If you have suggestions we’d love to hear them as well, and we promise to take them into consideration. At the end of every month we will post a list of the top 5 things to happen in that month, whether it be school-related or otherwise. Since November has already ended, we figured we would start off our blog of lists with the Top 5 Things That Happened in November

Enjoy, and remember, don’t be afraid to share your thoughts.

Top 5 Things That Happened in November:

1. Thanksgiving
Celebrated the fourth Thursday every November, Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks with friends and family… not to mention eat everything in sight.

2. Basketball Season
Basketball teams striving to earn spots at the top of the WPIAL began their season by starting practice Nov. 20.  Let’s hope this is a winning season for both the boys and the girls!

3. Tom Diaz
Tom Diaz has shared his worldly expierences with Leechburg High School for over 35 years. His nature movies never cease to educate and fascinate his audiences. Can anyone figure out how he never even glaces back but he always knows what’s happening on the screen behind him? Amazing!

4. Twilight Saga: New Moon
The premiere of the much anticipated “New Moon” movie also happened on Nov. 20. Beating out “The Dark Knight ,” “New Moon” took best opening day record with a staggering gross of $72.7 million.

5. Children's Grief Awareness Day

On Nov. 19, students wore blue to commemorate the day. The Highmark Caring Place gives support to children and adults who have suffered grief from the death of a loved one. Thanks to the Student Council for making the day an event and to everyone who participated.

Top 5 things that happened in December:

1. The Girls’ and Boys’ “Tip-Off” Tournaments
The girls’ and boys’ basketball teams both participated in tip-off tournaments in the beginning of the month. The boys’ team hosted the tournament and was joined by Apollo, Saltsburg and Winchester-Thurston. The girls traveled to Apollo to compete against Apollo, Saltsburg and Career Connections.

2. Christmas
Who can think of December without thinking of Christmas? Christmas is perhaps the holiday that is most looked forward to. It’s a time for family, friends, presents and of course, Christmas break.

3. “The Christmas Bomber”
On Christmas Day, a 23-year-old Nigerian man boarded a Detroit-bound plane with the intent to ignite a package of explosives concealed in his underwear. Fortunately, the man was stopped before he could do any harm to the passengers, but he managed to inflict the pain of fear in many Americans.

4. The Tiger Woods Scandal
The most talked about sports star in the news and tabloids was Tiger Woods. In December, news leaked out, then seemed to pour out, that Tiger Woods had been caught in the act of infidelity on more than one occasion with more than one woman. Although his family problems are probably none of the public’s business, that’s exactly what Tiger’s problems have turned into.

5. New Years Eve
Dec. 31 is a day for celebrations as friends and family welcome the new year. The ball drops in Times Square as we count down 5… 4… 3… 2… 1! And so January and 2010 begins!

'Twilight' series a bad influence

Posted by "Garrett Miller" on March 4, at 8:49 a.m.

I completely disagree with "Twilight: New Moon" being in the Top 5 for November. This book/movie series is corrupting the minds of young children across America. Kids these days want to grow up and marry vampires and/or werewolves. It makes me sick to see a "Team Edward" or "Team Jacob" shirt on someone. How about "Team Boycott Twilight."

Tom Diaz continues to amaze

Everyone told me how excited I should be to see Tom Diaz. He was pretty awesome. How does he memorize that whole speech? I can't even memorize a five minute speech in public speaking!
