The Leechburg Area Ninth Grade students toured Fort Ligonier and its museum on October 6, 2010 under the supervision of Scott Hooks, Tyler Vargo, and Matt Barczykowski. During the field trip our students were exposed to a French and Indian War fortification that played a vital role in the capture of Fort Duquesne on November 25, 1758. While touring the reconstructed historical site, students were given a first-hand experience of the life of soldiers and officers in a French and Indian War fort. Students visited places inside the fortress such as the officers’ mess, barracks, commissary, officers’ quarters, hospital, quartermaster, and General Forbes’ hut. Inside the museum, students examined numerous items such as the 13 original paintings of 18th century leaders and the rare George Washington collection which featured the future first president’s pistols. Due to a generous donation by the Leechburg Education Association, students paid half price to attend Fort Ligonier.
